Ángel Américo Cerdas, or “Meco”, as his friends called him, had a small business dedicated to processing sand and gravel from the Taras River. He also had a small stone crusher and rented equipment to ICE’s Río Macho and Cachí projects. The picture in the right corner shows “don Ángel” with his family next to his first truck, 45 years ago. In December of 1977, he and his son Carlos founded a new company: Constructora MECO S.A.
In the early 80’s, MECO was a small contractor, renting earth-moving equipment to public and private builders in different areas throughout the country. Their first projects were the Aguacaliente industrial brickyard in Cartago province (upper picture), the Voice of America Station in La Marina de San Carlos, and several access roads in coffee farms and in the properties of the Land Development Institute (IDA).
By the mid-80’s, MECO had expanded into other markets and carried out larger scope projects, such as the rock fill dam for ICE’s Sandillal project, and SENARA’s Western Irrigation Channel.
It was in 1986, ten years after its foundation, that MECO was awarded its first important road contract: paving the road between Frailes and Tarbaca, and in 1990, the Atenas – San Mateo road.
In 1992, Constructora MECO began competing internationally. What fifteen years ago seemed a high-risk decision, has since shown to be a remarkable succession of accomplishments which have set MECO well apart from its competition. To date major projects have been completed in all the countries of Central America: Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama.
